What No one tells you about owning a horse
There are things that happen when you buy a horse. You buy your first horse and think that you are making dreams come true. There are more little surprises in store for you. These things may catch you off-guard and change your life forever. What are they?
1. It costs a lot more than you thought
There is this fee that membership, vet bills, vaccinations, and get ready for this. There is a medicine to de-worm your horse! Gross, well, yes but it is worse if you don't do it. Don't worry, you can't get these worms from your horse. After all of that there is the farrier who comes out to trim your horses hooves. How often depends on how fast the hooves grow. There is boarding fees and if you have your own place, you lucky duck, you have feed bills, fencing, barn maintenance, and it keeps going.
2. Your life will revolve around the weather
There is no riding in less than par weather unless you have an indoor riding arena, you lucky duck. If you don't, you will be watching the weather station or checking an app on your phone, for the sun to shine and the wind to be okay. If it is, you may find yourself cancelling appointments just to be able to go out and enjoy your horse. In the winter months, you may find yourself depressed because you can't go out and ride.
3. Bugs!
Okay so the weather is good, the place maintained, the bills paid. It's time to ride. However, then come the massive amount of bugs that make you believe that they are really part of organized crime. They will drive you crazy and you will find yourself researching ways to get rid of them, going broke on spray, and then trying to make your own at home.
4. People will ask to ride your horse
It will be hard to distinguish who likes you for you and who likes you for your horse. Personally, I let some ride my horse and tell others that it isn't possible. I've found myself making all kinds of excuses, like she's hurt, she's dirty, she needs the farrier. I've even found myself saying that she is a lesson horse and it will cost an X amount of money to ride. That usually stops them.
5. Your Google maps is pinned with tack stores
Everywhere you go you will find yourself finding the tack stores. You will hunt for tack and riding attire just as much as you hunt for your next horse! But it will be okay because you will love to spoil all of them.
